The fumigated pallet is the type of pallet that is disinfected and undergoes the pest control process. To ensure that pests do not get transferred from one country to the other one through the shipment of the commodities, some countries require to carry out the fumigation process. For this, wooden pallets are fumigated for disinfection. Fumigation of the pallets is done in 2 ways namely heat treatment and methyl bromide.

• Heat treatment- It is the process of placing the pallets in the high-temperature chamber for about 30 minutes and up to a specific temperature to take away all the bacteria that are there in the wood.
• Methyl bromide treatment- It is the process of stacking pallets in a sealed chamber and then spraying with the disinfection chemical to kill the bacteria from the wood.

Once done with these two processes of fumigation, a fumigation certificate is issued. The certificate is given to the customs authorities for the clearance of the imported goods.

Is the fumigation process risky?

The fumigation process releases a vapor that is destined to kill fleas, ticks or termites, or any type of bacteria. The toxicity of the fumigation is based on the used pesticides. Vapors can be breathed by humans, therefore a possible hazard if humans are exposed to the vapor.

How to find out whether the pallet is fumigated or not?

Once fumigated or heat treated considering the set standard, a fumigated pallet is stamped or branded with the mark of compliance. Fumigated and heat-treated pallets will bear the mark of MB and HT respectively.
